Preparation
The quality of the finish is directly related to the amount of time you put in preparing the timber. Everyone has their own approach to sanding, but we recommend starting at 180 grit, then move to 240 and then 320. That’s usually enough at this stage, but many builders will also sand to 400 grit. Don’t go any further because you need to leave some “tooth” in the timber so the dye can effectively soak in. If you sand too fine, the surface becomes so polished that the dye isn’t able to penetrate effectively leading to a patchy result. Leave the higher grades to the top coats.
The sanding process raises the grain of many timbers, so when you finish sanding, wet a rag and squeeze it to remove excess water. Wet down the wood and allow it to dry. Give it a final sand with 400 grit sandpaper to remove the raised grain.
Application
Although the dye is non-toxic, it will stain your hands, so wear rubber gloves. Pour some dye into a bottle and add water to achieve your desired intensity. Apply to some test wood before committing to your project. Pour some dye into a jar lid and soak up some up with a lint-free cloth such as an old T-Shirt. Apply the dye using a circular motion, ensuring you get an even coat over the wood. You’re more likely to get a consistent covering by applying thin coats. Allow to dry and repeat as many times as necessary to achieve your desired colour. 2 to 3 coats should do it.
Sealing
Being water-based, you can use pretty much anything for a top-coat, but we recommend either Tru-Oil or Shellac, also available in our shop.
Warning
These dyes will stain hands and clothing. Wear rubber gloves and protective outer clothing or take care. Rinse stained clothing in cold running water. When machine washing stained garments, wash separately or you may stain other clothes. Hands can be cleaned by scrubbing in hot soapy water, however some dried stains can be very hard to remove & may be visible for a day or so.
